Description of Private Spearfishing trip

The Private Spearfishing Trip offers an authentic Caribbean freediving and hunting experience guided by local spearfishing experts who practice this ancient technique sustainably. This fishing trip Playa del Carmen and Tulum option is designed for adventure seekers, freedivers, and fishing enthusiasts who want to learn traditional spearfishing methods in the rich waters of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef—targeting species like grouper, snapper, hogfish, and lobster in their natural habitat.

As a family-owned local agency operating in the Riviera Maya since 1994, Carey Tours partners with experienced local freediver guides who know the Caribbean reef intimately—where fish congregate, which species are sustainable to harvest, and how to hunt responsibly following conservation principles.

This spearfishing trip begins with a comprehensive briefing covering reef ecology, target species identification, proper speargun technique, safety protocols, and ethical harvesting practices. Unlike rod-and-reel fishing, spearfishing requires breath-hold diving, stealth, and precision—connecting you directly to the ancient method coastal communities have used for generations.

Your guide takes you to pristine fishing spots away from tourist areas where reef fish populations thrive. You’ll learn to dive quietly, approach fish without startling them, aim accurately, and handle your catch properly.

All spearfishing gear provided including spearguns, fins, rashguards, weight belts, and masks. The experience emphasizes sustainable harvest—taking only what you need, selecting appropriate-sized fish, and respecting marine protected areas. Optional: have your fresh catch prepared at a local restaurant for the ultimate ocean-to-table meal.

Perfect for experienced freedivers, hunters seeking new challenges, fishing enthusiasts wanting authentic techniques, and adventurous couples or friend groups ready for an adrenaline-filled private fishing trip that combines skill, patience, and connection to Caribbean traditions.

Experience Ancient Caribbean Hunting Traditions

This spearfishing trip connects you with fishing methods practiced by Caribbean coastal communities for millennia—a far more intimate and challenging experience than rod-and-reel fishing.

Whether you’re an experienced freediver looking to add spearfishing skills, a hunter seeking new challenges, or simply want to understand traditional fishing firsthand, Carey Tours partners with local experts who fish these reefs regularly and understand both the sport and conservation principles that ensure sustainability.

As a family-owned agency with 4,000+ satisfied guests since 1994, we work exclusively with licensed, experienced spearfishing guides who prioritize safety, ethical harvest, and genuine skill-building.

  • 1
Stop 1: Meeting Point (7:45 AM) Meet your local freediver guide at a designated meeting point in Playa del Carmen or Tulum. No hotel pickup—direct marina/beach meeting allows flexible timing and optimal departure for fishing conditions. Your guide provides an overview of the day's target areas and confirms everyone's freediving experience level.
  • 2
Stop 2: Comprehensive Briefing (7:50 AM - 8:00 AM) Detailed instruction covering Caribbean reef system, target fish species (grouper, snapper, hogfish, lionfish), conservation guidelines, speargun safety and operation, freediving techniques for fish approach, and hand signals for underwater communication. Review of legal size limits and protected species. This education ensures both safety and responsible harvesting throughout the trip.
  • 3
Stop 3: Gear Up and Boat Departure (8:00 AM - 8:30 AM) Fit spearfishing equipment including speargun, fins, mask, rashguard, and weight belt. Your guide explains what to expect at each location and demonstrates proper speargun handling.
  • 4

Your experienced guide locates fish, demonstrates stalking technique, and assists with shot placement. Begin hunting target species while the guide ensures safety, proper identification, and ethical harvest practices.
  • 5
Stop 5: Multiple Fishing Spots (9:30 AM - 11:30 AM) Move between different reef areas and depths based on conditions, fish activity, and group success. FAQs

  • 1
Do I need freediving or spearfishing experience? Some freediving ability is helpful but not required. You should be comfortable holding your breath and diving to 10-20 feet. Your guide provides complete instruction. First-timers welcome with supervision.
  • 2
Is this physically demanding? Moderately demanding. Requires ability to freedive repeatedly, swim with fins, and handle speargun underwater. Good swimming ability and basic fitness are necessary.
  • 3
How many dives do we make? Varies by individual stamina and conditions. Typically 15-30 dives total across different spots over 3 hours of active hunting time.
  • 4
Can we keep what we catch? Yes, within legal limits and sustainable practices. Your guide cleans and fillets catch. Many local restaurants will cook your fish for a fee.
  • 5
What if we don't catch anything? Spearfishing is a amazing experience and it requires skill and patience. Success isn't guaranteed, especially for first-timers. Your guide maximizes chances but wild fish behavior varies. The experience itself—freediving, hunting, reef exploration—is valuable regardless.
  • 6
Is spearfishing environmentally sustainable? When practiced responsibly, spearfishing is highly selective (target specific fish, avoid bycatch) and sustainable. Your guide follows conservation practices and respects protected species and areas.
  • 7
Why is transfer not included? Direct meeting point allows precise departure timing based on ocean conditions and optimal fishing windows. Reduces cost, allowing better guides and equipment.
  • 8
What safety measures are in place? Comprehensive briefing, experienced guide supervision, proper equipment, buddy system diving, and adherence to safe freediving practices throughout.
  • 9
Can beginners participate? Yes, with realistic expectations. Beginners may take time to develop technique and likely won't harvest as much as experienced spearfishers. Your guide provides patient instruction and ensures safe, educational experience.
